for balancing the budget, small business growth, energy independence, improving schools and new trade agreements. wolf, we all know that likability in the end sometimes matters on these nights a lot more than even the details. wolf. >> jessica, what's the obama campaign saying about what jim acosta just reported that romney finally is giving some details as far as potential deductions that he would curtail? what are they saying about that? >> reporter: they're already pushing back against that new revealed detail saying that that doesn't even help the middle class, that it could even mean a tax increase for the middle class. in a blog post on what they call their truth telling website they say that "it would raise taxes for millions of middle class families." and it says in part "here's the problem, many families deduct more than $17,000 now." they say even on health care there's a more than $15,000 deduction. and then they go through more deductions. they say this could mean a tax increase for some families. wouldn't be surprised if that one comes up tonight, wolf. >> i think it probably almost

his strategy of investing in education, in research, in energy independence, in infrastructure, is a winning strategy. i think that's the reason why we've added five million jobs in the last 30 months, more jobs than in eight years of george w. bush, and when you consider that the policies being advanced by governor romney are the same as those pursued by george w. bush that got us into this mess, i think the american people are going to see that and look past what is admittedly not the president's best night. i give it to governor romney on style points. but on substance, and that's what matters, the president wins and should. >> you're a friend of the president's. you know him better than almost anybody in the political world, certainly. what went wrong, do you think? what was the thinking? was there something we didn't know about? people suggesting he may have been given bad news just to explain the sort of strangely morose mood he seemed to be in. >> i really don't know. i wasn't in denver. i know whenever i go to denver it takes me a little while to adjust to the altitude.

in one day in ohio. we have great energy. the governor's going to win this state, it's going to be close, he's going to win. >> he said race changed on wednesday he's talking about the debate. yeah. i don't think so. i'm not feeling it on the ground. i've been here in ohio. i don't feel it. i think people definitely have an opinion about how the debate went, but at the end of the day it's going to matter about what policies. if mitt romney is going to privatize the medicare program and turn it into a voucher system, and the voucher only goes up two or 3% a year when everyone knows health care costs don't go up 2 or 3% a year, or gut the medicare program, we were a he an older state, we have a lot of seniors that access the medicaid programs for nursing homes, people who have children with disabilities access the medicaid program in ohio, when they see the romney/ryan budget when it hits the ground, he's going to lose. he's just not going to be able to carry enough independent voters. as i said on top of the auto rescue, we have people that have actually felt the obama policies help them.

the president is firm on energy quality or they can stay on their parent's health insurance plan until the age 26. those are the big differences between 2008 and now, and that's what we're hearing all over the country no matter where we go, and it's certainly been inspiring for those of us who have the chance to go to all these states on behalf of the president. >> kal, how do you make an impact here? i mean, people sometimes -- do they look at you and see the movies and think stoner? i mean, how did you get involved in politics? >> it's a very good question. i ask myself that a lot. i am politically an independent. i love the fact that we've got the chance to make all those crazy movies. i talk about this a lot. in 2007 i had a bunch of friends who were really struggling. i had a buddy who i talk about from time to time who i had to make this crazy decision whether he was going to get eyeglasses to see the board or buy his textbooks one semester in community college. i know folks that were discharged under the don't ask, don't tell policy. met tons of young people that didn't have access to h
